I posted a ton about John Mayer’s new record Battle Studies while it was being made. Now that it’s out, for those wondering what I think of it, let me say this: I like it a lot. That’s all I’m saying for now. Maybe more on that in a future post.
But…
I do want to bring up again the discussion regarding the single “Who Says” and it’s somewhat questionable lyrical content/depth. I recently read an interview with Mayer, which covers the subject of that tune and the general direction of the album as a whole. I can’t decide if his comments change my understanding of the situation with that song or not.

I had to go back and review the prior discussion on this when you mentioned it a month ago. No need to re-hash your viewpoint, and I still think you’re on the right track in that he’s not taking himself too seriously here.
For me, the real discussion point would then be: is his approach acceptable and/or necessary? I tend to come down on the “John Mayer is brilliant rather than shallow” side of the argument, so while I might not like his word choice on a moral basis, but I really dig his ability to say something in a different way. (D’Angelo’s “Devil’s Pie” comes to mind for some reason – love the point, not the words. Given some thought, I’m sure there are myriad examples)
Mayer may even take a more intelligent stab by subtly labeling people as alarmist who may too loudly protest his pot reference. That’s the joke – he’s baiting you.
BTW: I thought his interview answers while interesting, were way too close to the typical “My-life-as-a-celebrity-is-soooooo-tough” lament that is fairly nauseating.
