So I watched this earlier today. It’s not BAD or anything, but I have to say, I’m kinda disappointed in it. The Q&A isn’t great, and the soloing seems a little aimless. I mean, I still love Matt, and I’m glad whoever recorded this 10 years ago finally got around to posting it, but it just let me down a little.
Decide for yourself…

Totally, Fink… his tones are killer. Like always. I guess I should explain myself a little, in saying that I’m “let down” by the clinic. It’s more like the improvising and soloing feels a little hippie-jam-band-ish, and the Q&A isn’t as deep as I would want it to be. “How do you tune your drums?” and other non-specific crap questions like that. It almost seems like he doesn’t even want to be there.
But yes, the tones are killer, and there are definitely moments in his soloing where he’s being his normal totally sick self.

I think it’s killer. His off-the-cuff improvising gives us a glimpse into why he’s one of the most creative drummers out there. He’s a guy who hasn’t lost the desire to just play the drums for fun and see what comes out. Also, I love his ratio of playing to talking. I personally got more ideas of things to practice from his playing than I did from his Q&A session. I agree about the questions – not awesome. But still, I think there’s some great insight into who MC is as a musician here…

Some interesting improve there, and I think it would be fun to mess with that loop stuff he was going. Definitely not a teacher, though. Goold clinics are much more informative.
